Book Fare – Heal Your Headache

Reading for migraine-sufferers. Book review of Heal Your Headache by David Buchholz, MD.

Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain by David Buchholz, MD.

When I was experiencing daily migraines for more than two consecutive months, my neurologist recommended that I undergo a migraine elimination diet and gave me a 10-page print out of what appeared to be random dos and don’ts. I needed more understanding if I were to going to take the diet plunge. I needed a migraine diet self-help book; no, I needed a textbook!

I landed on Dr. Buchholz’ book for many reasons, and I was impressed with his Johns Hopkins credentials.

Reading for migraine-sufferers

Dr. Buchholz provides a scientific explanation for the mechanism of migraine and now it is impacted by so many variables. He also explains that it is not hopeless; one can control migraines by taking several preventative steps, one of which is dietary modification. A handy, two-page chart of dietary triggers to migraine is included along with a several page break down of why certain foods are triggers and how to avoid them. For me, this was an eye-opening read, especially the section about migraine threshold and trigger level. Specifically, “Triggers enter the migraine control center in a constant flow, activating the mechanism only when they build to a level above your threshold.” Genius!

Although this book is designed for the migraine patient, it is really a great read on how to take control of any medical issue that is believed to be impacted by food.

What is a migraine? A mechanism that generates headaches by way of producing swelling and inflammation of blood vessels in the head.
