In our sizzling Texas summers, springs, and even autumns, we really need to stay hydrated and replenish our electrolytes. Dr. John's original electrolyte concoction does just that, without all of the added chemicals and refined junk found in commercial sports drinks. With my twist of replacing coconut water with lime juice, diluting the juices with more filtered water, and replacing honey with maple syrup, it is low-FODMAP, too, which means it should not flare up your IBS symptoms or inflammation, which we all know is ever so important when getting a work-out on!

  • 2 lemons
  • 2 limes
  • 4 mandarin oranges or 1 large (navel) orange
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 4 cups filtered water


  1. Using citrus juicer, press, or reamer, juice lemons, limes, and oranges. Strain to remove pulp and seeds. Pour juice into large, glass pitcher.
  2. Add to juice salt, maple syrup, and water. Stir well with spoon.
  3. Cover pitcher and keep in refrigerator.
  4. Even better, dispense into personal sports drink containers, chill, and then grab-and-go when going on your next outdoor adventure!


  • Serve either room temperature or chilled.
  • Keeps in refrigerator for up to 5 days, although I would recommend drinking within 2 days in order to get all those vitamins and minerals.
  • Stir well before serving.
